How to Celebrate Thanksgiving in Brussels

As a long-time expat in Brussels (nearly 25 years!), I systematically forget about ‘America-only’ holidays like Presidents’ Day, Columbus Day etc – EXCEPT for the last Thursday in November which is American Thanksgiving, otherwise known as Turkey-day, and forever ingrained in my memories of childhood growing up in California.

As the name implies, the theme of the Thanksgiving holiday generally revolves around coming together and giving thanks, with the centerpiece of most celebrations being a Thanksgiving feast traced to the Puritans (known today as “Pilgrims”) who emigrated from England on the Mayflower ship….

But how & where to have this oh-so-traditional American dinner in Brussels?? That’s not an easy one. For nearly my entire Brussels experience, the only places to my knowledge serving a proper Thanksgiving dinner here were a certain large American hotel or a certain pseudo-American chain restaurant. Or you could try creating the dinner at home or with friends – but then you have to preorder a whole turkey at a specialty butchers and try to fit it into tiny European oven. All possible, but certainly not ideal.

Well, that was until two years ago – because, as fate would have it, I met and became friends with two other West-Coast American entrepreneurs in Brussels – and voilà: CHEZWaWa, Tipsy Tribe, and Eat Dessert First by Laura are now teaming up to bring you the Thanksgiving ‘spirit of abundance’ in this country we now call home!

This year 2025, we’re hosting TWO Traditional Thanksgiving Dinners with a Belgian-American touch on November 27th and 28th – plus a festive ‘Thanksgiving-inspired’ Sunday Brunch on November 30th. At all three events you can enjoy mouthwatering food from CHEZWaWa, thirst-quenching craft beers from Tipsy Tribe Brewery & Distillery, and delicious homemade American pies from Eat Dessert First by Laura!
