Belgium: Fascinating beer culture

When I moved to Brussels a few months ago as an Erasmus student, one of the first things that I found fascinating was the beer culture in Belgium. It’s not just a drink, it’s part of their everyday life, something people take time to enjoy and understand.

Little by little, I started learning how to really taste it.
First, you look at the color, the foam, the way the light hits the glass. Every detail says something about what’s to come.
Then you smell hops, malt, fruit, maybe even a bit of spice or citrus. It’s like a first introduction before the actual taste.
When you take a sip, you start to feel how everything comes together: the sweetness, the bitterness, the texture. Some beers are crisp and light, others smooth and creamy each one with its own personality.
And then you think what’s the feeling it leaves behind? Maybe a fruity note, or a dry finish that makes you want another sip.
It’s something simple, but it changes how you experience beer. Living in Brussels has taught me to slow down and really pay attention to what’s in the glass, and to the culture around it. One day when I visit this place again - be it for a stag party, a student visit or a romantic outing - I'll be savoring every sip just like the local residents in this city we all love: Bruxelles.
